Great collection, but the orange/yellow cover? Yuck! The art director should've chosen a stately English red, it would've sold better.

    Even if you are a lifelong fan of The Kinks like I am, you can't go wrong with this Anthology set. Not only is it a great collection of songs spanning the years 1964-1971, but you only have to listen to the two dozen "previously unreleased" tracks to realize just why you bought it in the first place. The stereo version of Big Black Smoke is almost worth the price of admission. Not to mention other alternate gems of Dedicated Follower of Fashion, She's Got Everything, Mr. Pleasant, Act Nice & Gentle, etc. We also get the first version of Mr. Reporter sung by Ray with Dave only doing a background vocal. The lyrics are a bit more scathing than the later version. Also, this set includes almost all the tracks that appeared on The Great Lost Kinks Album. The booklet that's included is chock full of photos and magazine articles besides additional info on all the songs. The one big drawback is trying to get the CD's in and out of their pockets. I don't know what idiot designed the fold out book that houses them, but there should have been another opening to aid in removing the discs. The only other thing that bothered me was disc #5. It does have one obscure track from the Lola sessions, but it only includes the same four songs we always seem to get from the Percy soundtrack. They had room to add Animals In The Zoo and Just Friends, but they didn't. Now if they could only unearth a stereo version of King Kong, my life might be complete (chuckle).

    just when i thought i would not need another kinks box set after the great mono box set back in 2010 and the bbc box set back in 2012 as well as the deluxe versions of many titles that have come out over the past few years well, here i am again as there is stuff on this box set that i have never heard and i love the early unreleased demos that appear on here, this is a very nice well done box set, i cant say this is for all music lovers but i can say this is for KINKS FANS AS WELL AS 60S BRITISH ROCK FANS becouse if you are a 60s british rock fan of bands like the who, moody blues, yardbirds, the merseybeats as well as all the others then YOU MUST BE A KINKS FAN!!!! this is for a die hard kinks fan but still there is a lot to offer here for casual kinks fans as well, i love this box set!!!!!

    The other reviews of this fine box set pretty much cover the audio contents and sonic quality of this excellent 5 CD box set. I will add my vote to those who find this set indispensable. For my tastes, these tracks represent The Kinks at their creative peak (1964-1971). I never tire of this phase of The Kinks' history.

    But, the reason I am adding words to this space is because, as you may have noticed, this version of The Kinks box set, "The Anthology," also contains a 7" (vinyl) single ("You Really Got Me" b/w "Milkcow Blues" - both recorded live at Twickenham Television Studios and were previously unreleased at the time this set was released in the UK). The 7" that comes with this UK 2014 box set is identical to the one that was recently released as a separate 7" in the US for Record Store Day 2015 (same cover photograph, same 2 tracks, same recording dates). I mention this just in case you already have the Record Store Day 7 inch single of "You Really Got Me/ Milk Cow Blues" and are thinking about buying this boxed set just for the added single or, to give you fair notice in case you already have this boxed set with the bonus 7" and are thinking about buying the Record Store Day single. Nothing wrong with having duplicate copies of things, but it's often useful to have as much information as possible in advance. I hope this information is useful.

    Listening to this set I'm constantly reminded of why I like the KINKS so much. And why they're such an important band from that era of other great and important bands.

    It seems like every third track is something impressive--no matter if I've heard the Single, the finished album track, or a previously unreleased tune--the KINKS constantly amaze me with Ray Davies' lyrics and the band's instrumental backing. The arrangements are pure KINKS and that's enough, it's all I need to know (again) that the KINKS should be on the same plateau as BEATLES/WHO/HOLLIES/ZOMBIES/and whoever I've left off this short list.

    If a 'Greatest Hits' package is enough for you--more power to you--to each his own. But if you own more than 2-3 of the recently up-dated 2 CD sets of the KINKS' first few albums, you should give purchasing this set some serious thought. It's good. But it's something more. It's the KINKS from (arguably) their best years.

    Like the GRATEFUL DEAD, some people "get" the KINKS, others just don't hear it. This is a good cross-section of why the KINKS are so important, and make listening to music so pleasurable. Nobody writes about England, English people, and the English condition better and more consistently than Ray Davies. Davies' words, the band's sound--it's all right there.

Bei einem Wiederverkauf wird ein wesentlich höherer Preis erzielt, wenn der Artikel unbeschädigt ist.
    Hier bei unserem Produkt ist bereits bei der Produktplanung Einiges schief gelaufen.
    Der Box ist eine Vinyl Single beigelegt, diese hat andere Abmaße als Booklet und CD Buch. Dadurch entstehen Hohlräume. Der schöne farbige Pappumkarton ist aber für diesen Zweck mit viel zu dünnem Papier konstruiert. Dadurch werden die Ränder eingedrückt.
    Speziell die rote Oberseite ist zerdrückt (siehe Fotos).
    Amazon kann dafür Nichts. Aber trotzdem hat mir Amazon nach Reklamation, mit Beschreibung des Fehlers , 3x eine zerknitterte Box mit gleichem Fehler zugeschickt.Jetzt möchte ich eine 4.Box nicht mehr haben. Nach so viel Reklamationen hätte man sich ja mal die Mühe machen können eine einwandfreie Box im Lager zu suchen.
    Desweiteren wäre es auch notwendig, dass Amazon ihren ganzen kaputten Bestand an die Industrie zurückschickt. Es kann nicht sein, dass versucht wird, die nicht einwandfreien Boxen noch beim Kunden loszuwerden.

Schuld daran ist in erster Linie natürlich SONY, welche solch eine unpraktische dünne Hülle für den e-commerce Handel kreiert haben.
    ABER: amazon liefert weiter so aus , dass Alles zerdrückt ankommt. Diesmal hatte ich die Idee gleich 4 Boxen für Freunde und mich zu bestellen, in der Annahme, dass dann amazon einen festen Karton zur Lieferung nehmen muß ( und nicht in Pappe presst) und richtig auspolstert.
    ALLE 4 Boxen kamen in einem schon beschädigten Karton zerdrückt an. Schon bei der Annahme des Paketes wackelte alles im Karton.
    Die zerdrückten Kinks-Boxen waren schlimmer beschädigt als vor 2 Jahren.
    Alles zurück geschickt. Ich gebe es jetzt auf !

    Inutile de répéter longuement ce qui a été déjà dit sur la grandeur des Kinks, le groupe le plus original des sixties britanniques.

    Rappelons juste en quelques mots et en vrac pourquoi ils furent uniques et ce qui fait leur spécificité :

    Parce que Ray Davies a écrit quelques-unes des paroles et des mélodies les plus géniales de la pop anglaise.

    Parce que les Kinks ont régulièrement tutoyé ou dépassé le niveau des meilleurs de leur temps: Beatles, Stones et Who compris ("You Really Got Me", "Waterloo Sunset", " Till the End of the Day", " Set me Free", "All day and all of the night", "David Watts", "Dead-End Street", "Days", "Pictures Book", "Victoria", "Lola" et so on)

    Parce qu'ils avaient une vraie conscience de classe qui ne fut jamais plus finement exprimée par d'autres (et surtout pas par les Clash)

    Parce que le pré-punk "Dead End Street" est une des plus subtiles chansons "sociales" jamais écrites.

    Parce que les riffs sauvages de Dave Davies le frérot et l'économie de son jeu font de lui l'anti guitar héros le plus exemplaire d'un temps où les soli commençaient à ne plus en finir.

    Parce que leurs harmonies vocales étaient d'une splendeur égalant largement celle des Fab Four sans jamais tomber dans le sirop contrairement au sus-nommés.

    Parce que les Kinks n'ont jamais été Flower Power ni ne sont ridiculisés en compagnie de Maharishi ou autres Meher Baba. Et qu'ils ont pourtant créé avant les Beatles l'un des rares morceaux pop (avec "Paint It Black" et à la rigueur "Norvegian Wood") incluant du sitar qui reste toujours écoutable de nos jours ("See my Friends")

    Parce que le riff de "You Really Got Me" fait passer "Satisfaction " pour une bluette neurasthénique.

    Parce que contrairement aux Stones ils ne se mirent pas à ne chanter que des histoires de fesses à partir du début des années soixante-dix, car les Kinks, eux, avaient encore quelque chose à dire.

    Parce que dans une industrie du rock où les 3/4 des stars sont des abrutis et des ignares, Ray Davies était intelligent et cultivé et de plus sans jamais l'étaler (contrairement à Elvis Costello)

    Parce que "Lola" est la meilleure chanson de travelo que Lou Reed n'a jamais su écrire.

    Parce qu'ils se sont sabordés avec élégance face à l'incompréhension d'un public épris de leurres "peace and love" ou pseudo-rebelles et effrayé par leur lucidité et n'enregistrèrent après 73 que des albums pour rire genre parodies hardeuses au énième degré que personne n'allait d'évidence acheter. Et ils le savaient.

    Parce qu'ils furent tout en restant pop plus punk que le furent jamais les imposteurs des années 70 (Sex Pistols et cie) et plus réellement sociaux que tous les Dylan de la planète et ce sans jamais chanter un seul slogan.

    Parce que Ray Davies était modeste (pas comme Lennon)

    Parce qu'ils sont de Pete Townshend le groupe préféré.

    Parce les Kinks avaient de l'humour. Et étaient tristes en même temps et violents et compatissants de même: ils étaient de la dynamite dans des toffees. Alors que d'autres étaient des toffees déguisés en dynamite.

    Parce que "Waterloo Sunset" est - certains l'affirment- la plus belle chanson pop des sixties britanniques.

    Parce le génie de Ray Davies donnerait même à un français l'envie d'être sujet de Sa Gracieuse Majesté.

    Quant à cette anthologie 5 cd pourquoi conseiller de l'acheter ? Why buying another compilation, uh ?
    Eh bien pour les raisons déjà mentionnées et parce qu'elle comprend tous leurs meilleurs titres de 64 à 71 (donc de la période qui seule importe) sans aucun oubli, que la remastérisation est parfaite (versions stéréo ou mono qui sautent hors des baffles comme des fox anglais) et parce qu'elle contient des raretés souvent de première classe et un vrai... 45 tour vinyle en prime qui fait regretter le temps où la musique avait vraiment une âme inscrite dans les sillons.
    Petit bémol dans cette Tamise de perfection : les cd sont un peu difficiles à extraire du coffret mais c'est un détail sans importance. Ecouter les Kinks mérite bien un petit effort, non ?

    Premier et second cd : les Kinks font leurs armes Rythm and Blues sous influence Chuck Berryenne. Energie parfois brouillonne où pointe dès 64 l'originalité de l'écriture Davisienne ("Stop your Sobbing", "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" "A Well Respected Man")
    Troisième, quatrième et cinquième cd : Davies s'exprime enfin à plein et sans frein. Tout dans ces 3 derniers cd n'est que pop, luxe et pure beauté albionesque.

    Et tout ça pour une quarantaine d'euros, l'équivalent d'une poignée de shillings.
